Wasilla, AK – Jeff Nelles, assistant principal of Wasilla High School, has been selected as the Alaska Secondary School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals. Assistant Principal Nelles has served as principal at Wasilla High School for six years.
“Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior” hangs in the Wasilla High School gym as a daily reminder of the schools culture of inclusion and commitment. Assistant Principal Nelles said regarding the quote “I feel that this speaks to who we are and what we are about. Students know that staff care about them. We have really stressed to staff and students that relationships matter here at Wasilla High School.”
At a school with a current graduation rate at 93% Assistant Principal Nelles shared that he felt the implementation of a program called Capturing Kids Hearts, along with being responsive to student needs and being deliberate in scheduling students into classes based on their needs, has all been contributing factors the success of the students. He shared of his years serving as assistant principal at Wasilla High that “Being a part of a strong leadership team has been an incredible experience.”
Principal Nelles will be honored during the 2016 Alaska Principals Conference. The Alaska Principals conference will be held at the Anchorage Sheraton Hotel October 23-25, 2016. This year is the 50th anniversary of the conference and will feature keynote speakers Jimmy Casas and Christopher Kai.
