School Principal Recognition Month

Effective Date: Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

WHEREAS, school principals nurture and cultivate Alaska’s most valuable resource – our children; and

WHEREAS, principals are the heads of our schools, looking after the student body, administering daily operations of the school, and providing staff development and evaluation, all of which are crucial to successful schools and classrooms; and

WHEREAS, in addition to impacting students and their families directly, principals have a responsibility to provide positive mentorship and leadership to teachers and other educational support staff in their respective schools. By capitalizing on this powerful opportunity, principals can raise the level of educational excellence of an entire community and deepen the benefit each student receives; and

WHEREAS, principals must play an active role in assessing educational standards and improving scholastic progress in the classrooms as they implement State policies at the local level, while also considering the needs of students, parents, and the larger community; and

WHEREAS, along with their parents and other family and community members, students look to principals for guidance and counsel as important role models. Principals are uniquely positioned to help families instill a life-long love of learning in Alaska’s children; and

WHEREAS, all across Alaska, good principals serve as central figures in their communities. In rural Alaska, the school often serves as the nucleus of activity of each town or village, both during and after school hours, further raising the importance of the principal as an influential positive role model; and

WHEREAS, we recognize the impacts made by exceptional principals across Alaska in the lives of our youth and appreciate their dedication to ensuring a bright future for young Alaskans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim October 2013 as:

School Principal Recognition Month

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to acknowledge and appreciate principals who invest in our children and communities.
